Today in History: December 24th

1814: The Treaty of Ghent is signed. This Treaty ended the War of 1812, resetting relations between the US and Britain to Status Quo Ante Bellum. News of the signing, however did not reach the US until January 1815, in which time Andrew Jackson captured New Orleans.

1942: Admiral Darlan is assassinated.The Leader of the Vichy Navy, Darlan had ordered French forces in North Africa to stop resisting the allies, and was killed by Fernand Bonnier de la Chappelle, a monarchist. The culprit was sentenced to death the next day and executed by firing squad the 26th.
